Fifty thousand of species in nature vanishing quickly every year, it means human being is losing balance of food chain, as well as food culture of human being which is the precious asset.
”Plant genetic resources database” has been built since 1983, with spend of 0.4 billion of NT dollars, Tse-Xin foundation also started to map about germplasm preservation and rehabilitation of fallow lands since 2012, searching guide from profession to save the extinguishing species, from 2015 until now Tze-Xin is deeply involved in east cost accompanying farmers and promoting aboriginal food culture and rehabilitation of millet which stands for aboriginal festival halidom.
Millet was entrée of aborigine, time changes, millet gets less and less, vanishing, Tze-Xin delivered millet seeds which was offered from tribes to Seed Improvement and Propagation Station for cultivation from 2021-2023, Taichung Seed Improvement and Propagation Station transferred the successful new eight species to the demonstration farm of millet, Mapolong farm, Fata'an, Hualien, three months later after all the effort from farmers, millet is growing in their own land, for this, Tze-Xin foundation and authorities from agricultural department held a seminar called “Millet economy germplasm preservation seminar”on May 14, 70 farmers from 12 tribes attended in the demo field to witness and celebrate for the return of healthy seeds from Seed Improvement and Propagation Station back to the land to grow, and farmers were guided for “ millet disease”to be more confident to breed millet.
After all the efforts from tribe people, millet seeds coming back from Seed Improvement and Propagation Station and now growing and tasseling in the demo field, speaking of the hard work for this rehabilitation, Ker Chun Chi said “during the period of rehabilitation, bad weather, plant disease, wild animals is challenging, the investment of finance and labor is beyond imagination, it’s a hard job”, how millet becomes an industry, Ker Chun Chi is ready for the long term job in future “though it will be hard all way long, but it’s right to do that, we gather all partners for a long term collaboration .”
Tse-Xin foundation feels so pleased accompanying farmers all along to see the consistent achievement of millet rehabilitation by effort from farmers, public sectors, research sector, hoping to share the germplasm preservation with public, to pass on, from generation to generation, the precious species nursed by ancestors, millet can be always produced and be set on the table, millet culture can be continued and pour more strength onto this industry, more people being aware of the value, meaning of millet in aborigine culture and germplasm preservation.
